The HTIS Chess Team's purpose is to introduce HTIS's students to the game of chess, and to provide a venue for experienced players to enhance their playing ability and compete on behalf of the school. The team meets Thursday evenings, and is a year round activity with fall [Sept–Dec.] and spring [Jan.–May] sessions. Lessons, which address the wide range of playing abilities are provided, in addition to a host of different activities. Opportunities to compete at the local, state, and potentially national levels are available. The team is open to all students of HTIS, from Kindergarten through 8th grade. No prior chess experience is necessary to participate. The team is coached by Joe Demetrick, a USCF Certified Local Chess Coach and active tournament player. For more information regarding the HTIS Chess Team (either participating or volunteering), please contact Joe Demetrick. |
